Thank You Mom & Dad!

This week Paisley turned 9 months.  Really...9 months already?

She's growing so fast and changing everyday.  I can see her changing right before my eyes and it's scary to think that in only 3 months she will technically not be a "baby" anymore!  She will be a toddler!  (Although, she will ALWAYS be my baby!)

This week, while dropping Paisley off at school I got to meet with her teacher about her progress.  We talked for a while about how she's eating, her ability to crawl, how well she can play by herself, her independence (yes, she gets that from me)...and then the bomb dropped...the conversation switched to their process of transitioning babies to the toddler room.  My heart sank...she can't be talking about my Paisley...my BABY...really, already?

After our talk, we walked over and watched the toddlers participate in art class.  They were precious sitting so paitently in their own minature chairs at the little toddler sized table.  Then I realized that will be Paisley.  I'm not ready!  People told me she would grow fast but if I would have realized how fast I would have held on kicking and screaming the whole way!

How do you watch your "baby" change into something that is no longer a "baby" and know you can never get your "baby" back?

It made me think about my parents and I realized once again how much they love me and my sisters.  But how did they do it...how could they love us (their babies) so much but let us go?

Honestly, I don't have an answer other than they did it because they love us...baby or not.

I'm so thankful my parents chose to love us and let us grow up.  Sure, I was going to grow up regardless, but they could have held on forever.  They could have held on so tight I wouldn't be able to function as an adult without them.  They could have held my hand through college, not letting me accomplish anything by myself.  They could have given me all the money I ever needed instead of making me get a job...but they didn't.

They blessed my life and my family's life by teaching me independence and allowing me to think for myself.  To challenge authority when necessary, to learn from my mistakes, to love and be loved unconditionally, to be self sufficient and a God-fearing woman.  I love how they taught me the value of working hard to get somewhere in life, that it's what you know that will you get you there (not people), the value of money, how to get a job, the value of family, determination, sacrifice and how to give forgiveness-not guilt.

I want the same, and more, for Paisley so I'm going to let go and let her grow up.  I'm going to let her go to the toddler room, teach her how to get her own milk in the morning, give her chores and let her complete her school projects instead of doing them for her.  I'm going to let her bump her head on the playground because she forgot to duck, teach her how to say I'm sorry and forgive the people that hurt her, let her tell me she's mad at me and give her a hug anyway.  I'll read the Bible to her, be there to teach her how to drive (because we sure don't want her driving like Daddy...hehe), teach her how to get a job and be there to move her into college.  Then one day, when she's all grown up, I'll help her pick out that pretty white dress and let her walk down the aisle and start a family of her own.

I'll do this, all while standing one step behind her cheering her on.  All because I love her...baby or not!

Thank you Mom & Dad for teaching me valuable life lessons that I can pass along to my baby.

Thank you for loving me always...baby or not!

Happy Birthday Blog!

One year ago, I started this blog to keep our family and friends updated.  So, to celebrate the blog's anniversary, I thought I'd give you a few highlights from the past year.

July 2011 We...
  • celebrated July 4th at Lake Gaston with my family.  I sure do miss getting out on the boat!
  • found out we would be moving to Topeka, KS.
  • found out we were expecting our first baby!

August 2011 We...
  • announced to our families we were pregnant!
  • (I) left my job at MUSC and still miss the wonderful ladies there.
  • got to see our baby for the first time at the ultrasound appointment!

September 2011 We...
  • moved into our new home.
  • went to a few festivals in our new town.

October 2011 We...
  • took a trip to Vegas over Matt's birthday for a conference with his work.  (It happened to be the same time my parents went for my Dad's work; so, we visited with them!)
  • (Toby) was injured while staying at the kennel and had to have surgery.
  • celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary by staying in (Toby had just come home from surgery).  We had a candle light dinner from Olive Garden and enjoyed our annual tradition of eating chocolate cake afterwards!
  • we passed out candy to our new neighbors for Halloween.  I was a peanut M&M (I was about 19 weeks pregnant) and Matt dressed up as a gecko (the kids loved him)!

November 2011 We...
  • found out we were having a baby GIRL!
  • flew home for Thanksgiving and had a gender revealing party with each family!
  • purchased Matt's new car...Toyota Rav4.

December 2011 We...
  • flew home for Christmas!  We spent a few days before Christmas in Clayton with my family, and then spent Christmas day and a few days afterwards with Matt's family in Wilmington.
  • announced our baby girl would be named Paisley Jean.
  • had an ECU themed baby shower on New Year's Eve day.
  • enjoyed dinner out with my family for New Year's Eve.

January 2012 We...
  • celebrated Brenda's birthday/New Year's Day with both families at lunch, and then flew home to KS.
  • celebrated being together for 11 years (Matt gave me flowers and my favorite candy).
  • joined the YMCA and started swimming.
  • started parenting classes at the hospital.
  • got to see Paisley during our 4D ultrasound. (We had two of them because she didn't cooperate the first time.)

February 2012 We...
  • took our babymoon in Kansas City.
  • had a baby shower hosted by some great friends here in Topeka.
  • registered at the hospital to have the baby!

March 2012 We...
  • went on a major shopping spree to purchase all of our last minute items before Paisley arrived.
  • (Matt) had surgery on his nose to correct his septum.  He's sinuses are much better now.

May 2012 We...

  • took an afternoon to spend time together by the lake for Memorial Day.
  • (Paisley) turned one month!

June 2012 We...
  • (Matt) traveled for work, so Paisley and I went to Clayton to stay with my family.  It was a very hectic week with lots of visitors, but it was nice to see family.  Paisley had a hard time adjusting to the new environment, but she did great on the flights.
  • (I) took Paisley to her 2 month appointment for her first set of shots and that was terrible. She pokes her bottom lip out really far and then cries with big alligator tears...so sad!
  • had Matt's parents in for a visit to KS for a week.
  • celebrated Matt's first Father's Day!  Paisley got him a collage of pictures for work and made a pottery plate for him with her foot prints.

July 2012 We...
  • (Matt) took vacation for the 4th.  We enjoyed staying close to home and spending 5 days together!
  • (Paisley) turned 3 months and rolled over from her tummy to her back.
  • (I) started my new job in HR with Caterpillar.
  • (Paisley) started daycare full-time at Little Love Bugs Learning Center.  I get to go see her everyday for lunch!

We've had a busy year, but it's been so blessed.  I wouldn't change anything about it...well except having family closer.  On the other hand, we know God has led us here for a purpose and we trust in him to lead our lives.  I'm so excited to see where the next year takes us and plan to keep you all updated through the blog!

Don't forget Toby:

Toby's life over the past year has really changed as well.  He has gone from being our only baby to being our second baby...that unfortunately, comes second now.  It was never our desire to make him feel left out and we've tried to make sure we take time out just for him....but it's so hard with a newborn.  Plus, now that we're halfway across the country, he can't just hop in the car with us when we take a road trip to visit family...he has to stay in the kennel...and it's so sad.

Toby is also getting older (you can see how white his face is getting in the picture below).  He sleeps a lot and sometimes trips when he goes up the stairs.  It breaks my heart to see him age.  Don't get me wrong, he still loves to play and greets us at the door with a toy everyday!

We love him so much and he will always be our baby!  We tell Paisley her furry brother loves her all the time...and he really does!
